Welcome to the 25th Anniversary of the Alonzo Stagg Hike. This hike offers 10, 20, 25, and 30-50 mile options. The Hiking merit badge requires the Scout to complete five 10-mile hikes and one 20-mile hike. Scouts who complete a 25-mile hike receive a certificate, and those who complete a 50-mile hike in less than 20 hours receive the Alonzo Stagg Excellence in Physical Fitness medal.
Depending on distance, hikers will travel local roads, C&O Canal Towpath, Mt. Vernon, Custis Lee, Bluemont, 4-Mile Run, W&OD and Bluemont Connector Bike Trails. Hikers are specifically cautioned to be rational in selecting their intended hiking distance - even 10 and 20 mile hikes are challenging. ++Hikers must have completed at least one practice hike of at least half the distance they plan to hike in the month prior to the hike. Hikers will be asked to enter the date of one practice hike when registering.++ ++Because the permit from the Park Service caps the number of hikers, we must limit participation to hikers that are scout age (i.e. 10/11 years of age) or older++. All hikers must travel with at least one buddy.
++Start times and expected finish times++: All hikes start at St. Agnes gym. Check-in 30 minutes before start of hike.
Distance | Start Time | Expected Finish Time | Finish Line
50 | 5:30 AM | 8 PM- 1 AM | Sunday Bluemont Park
25 | 5:30 AM | 12 PM- 3 PM | Fletcher's Boathouse, with shuttle return to St. Agnes Gym for check-out
20 | 7:00 AM | 1 PM- 3 PM | St. Agnes Gym
10 | 8:30 AM | 12 PM- 1 PM | St. Agnes Gym
No Late Starts: Hikers who arrive late will NOT be allowed to attempt to “catch up with” the previously departed group(s), because they will have missed all the pre-hike instructions and also would have to run to catch up, which is prohibited. A late hiker may participate in a later starting hike, if they wish.
Cut-off times: The minimum pace is 2.5 mph (for 50-mile hikers, it is 3.0 mph until Gravelly Point). Hikers unable to maintain this speed through the support station check-ins will be asked to end their hike and return by shuttle to St. Agnes. Hikers will not be allowed to continue because support stops will close based upon these cut-off times.
++Check-ins, Support Stops and Gear++: Hikers will be required to wear a numbered runner’s bib and a ribbon of surveyor tape (both will be provided) in order to be recognizable to hike staff on possibly very crowded trails. At the support stations along the route, hikers will be required to check-in before proceeding with the hike so that we make keep track of everyone and their progress. Hikers may also obtain food, snacks, drinks, First Aid, access to support daypacks or duffels, and return transportation to St. Agnes. There also will be adults positioned at various critical “waypoints”, others acting as “tail end charlies” and still more providing roving bicycle support over most of the route.
All hikers should carry a fully-charged cell phone and a ++light++ daypack with water and food. Hikers traveling 25 miles or more may have a “support” duffel forwarded along the route. Hikers should label all items, especially duffel bags, with their name, unit number, and phone number (and should also include a 3x5 card with the same information ++inside++ their daypacks and/or duffel bags). Hikers should not use their cell phones while hiking. Stay alert!
